Produced with grapes from their La Romera vineyard in the village of Labastida, the 2018 Pagos de Viña Real is pure Tempranillo. It's from a plot of almost two hectares planted 40 years ago on clay and stony (boulder) soils at the foot of the Toloño Mountain, and they wanted the wine to reflect the expression of the place rather than the fruit. It fermented in small vats with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic and aging with lees in 300-liter French oak barrels. This is also a completely different wine from the previous vintages, now only from a specific vineyard and with less oak than in the past. It still has some grainy tannins that need polishing. It's full-bodied and has some rusticity that might require some time in bottle. 2,800 bottles were filled in November 2019.

Description
On the slopes of Mount Toloño, where the mist slowly dissipates at dawn, Pagos de Viña Real is born, a wine that captures the mineral and serene pulse of the Rioja Alavesa. It comes from a single plot: La Virgen, two hectares planted with Tempranillo over 40 years old in clay soils covered with pebbles. There, in Labastida, the vineyard enjoys a southern exposure and is protected from the north wind, which allows for slow and balanced ripening, with cool nights that preserve the natural acidity of the grapes. It is a wine that arises from a philosophy of minimum intervention and maximum respect for the character of the land.
Winemaking
The Pagos de Viña Real grapes are harvested by hand, in small boxes. The grapes, after a double selection, are semi-squeezed in small tanks, fermenting with indigenous yeasts at 28 °C and punching down daily. Maceration is prolonged after fermentation until tastings mark the optimum moment for devatting. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, where Pagos de Viña Real remains for 12 months, refining structure and complexity before fining and bottling.
Taste
On the nose, Pagos de Viña Real displays an intense aromatic load: ripe black fruit, notes of plum, fine cocoa, blond tobacco and a delicate balsamic background. There are also hints of spices and undergrowth. The palate is ample, with polished tannins and vibrant freshness. The acidity supports the fruit, while the oak adds depth without imposing itself. The finish is long, elegant and persistent, with echoes of black fruit, sweet spices and a mineral whisper. A serious, sober wine with an Atlantic soul that accurately reflects the nobility of its origin.
Ideal for red meats, game or spicy dishes, Pagos de Viña Real is a pure and refined expression of the deepest and quietest Rioja Tempranillo.
