Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The old Picarana white has been renamed to 2022 Marañones Albillo Real even though Picarana is still printed in small letters on the label (I guess to give it continuity). The wine is pale, very subtle, elegant, insinuating, clean and delicate, with precision and pristine aromas of white flowers and fruit, with a herbal and spicy twist. It comes from different vineyards, trying to express the altitude, granite and vintage with balance and elegance. The grapes were handpicked and selected to ferment with indigenous yeasts in 228-, 500- and 600-liter barrels and 1,200- and 1,500-liter oak foudres, where the wine matured for 10 months. It has a moderate 12% alcohol, very good freshness showcased by the pH of 3.23 and good acidity, 5.69 grams (measured in tartaric acid per liter of wine), for a variety that doesn't have much acidity. The mouthfeel is terribly elegant, pure and fresh. This is really impressive. 19,536 bottles produced. It was bottled in the summer of 2023.

Description
Nestled between the crags of Gredos and the centuries-old olive groves of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Bodega Marañones has managed to carve out its own voice in the Spanish wine scene. Its promoter, Fernando García, was not born among vineyards, but he embraced them as if they were his inevitable destiny. In a region where many saw hard soils and difficult roads, he saw purity, altitude and an opportunity to restore the Sierra de Gredos to its ancestral glory. It was precisely with Marañones Picarana, a white with an unwavering identity, that he dared to prove that Madrid is not only a land of rustic reds, but also the cradle of taut, vibrant, soulful whites.
The wine takes its name from a wild bird with a persistent song, which flies over the vineyards as a sentinel of the harvest. It is made entirely from Albillo Real, an ancestral variety, grown in small plots between 650 and 800 metres above sea level, on degraded granite soils with sand and red clay. These are old vines, many planted before the Vinos de Madrid DO existed, worked organically, without shortcuts or artifices, just hoes, hardened hands and a deep intuition for the land.
In a particularly hot vintage, Fernando took the risky decision to harvest in phases, respecting the natural ripening rhythm of each plot. It was his way of protecting the freshness of the grapes without sacrificing complexity.
Winemaking
The grapes, harvested by hand in small crates, undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in different formats: used French oak barrels, stainless steel tanks and small foudres. Each parcel is vinified separately, with a very gentle maceration, seeking transparency and precision rather than extraction.
The wine rests for about 10 months on its fine lees, without aggressive batonnage, only time and gravity as allies. Without fining or filtering, it is bottled with a minimum dose of sulphur dioxide, allowing each bottle to bear direct witness to the landscape in which it was born.
Taste
Marañones Picarana does not shout, it whispers firmly. It presents itself in the glass with a pale golden yellow hue, with hints of beeswax and dried straw. On approach, the nose unfurls a restrained but profound aromatic world: camomile flower, quince peel, candied lemon peel and a touch of dried hay, all underpinned by mineral undertones reminiscent of hot stone after the storm.
On the palate, it is a textural rather than voluminous experience: unctuous but restrained entry, followed by vibrant acidity, which cuts through the palate like a precision razor. The salinity appears in the centre of the mouth, as if the granite itself were speaking. On the finish, notes of raw almond, mountain tisane and a slight bitterness that is tense and refreshing.
It is a white with structure, but without ornamentation. Closer to a rebellious Chablis than a Mediterranean white, it suggests a table with cod, soft pickles or soft cheeses. Or better still: an evening without a clock, where silence and a glass are enough.
