Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Roederer's 2014 Cristal Rosé has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, almonds, citrus fruit and red berries mingled with notions of white flowers and wet chalk. Full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a layered core of fruit and a pillowy mousse, it's deep, racy and electric, concluding with a long, mineral finish. Comparatively open out of the gates, it's no slight to the 2014's seriousness to say that it will drink well while its 2013 counterpart sleeps in the cellar. Deriving from just a handful of the over 39 blocks that inform the regular Cristal 2014, I suspect that its origins have even more to do with the extra dimension it possesses above and beyond its white counterpart than the subtle infusion of Pinot Noir phenolics that give it its delicate pink hue.

Description
Louis Roederer, one of the last great family-owned Champagne houses, has combined tradition, innovation and terroir like few others. In 1974, Jean-Claude Rouzaud - a visionary heir - decided to create a rosé version of the iconic Cristal, and he did so with a conviction that was unusual for the time: to capture the purest expression of Pinot Noir without losing the elegance of Chardonnay. Thus was born Cristal Rosé, made only in exceptional vintages and from grapes grown biodynamically in the Grand Cru vineyards of Aÿ, Avize and Mesnil-sur-Oger, on chalk soils with a unique ability to convey minerality. The blend is usually composed of approximately 55% Pinot Noir - partially vinified with maceration and saignée - and 45% Chardonnay, which brings tension, luminosity and structure to the blend.
Winemaking
The vinification of Louis Roederer Cristal Brut Rosé is precise and meticulous. Part of the wine is fermented in oak vats to add complexity, without malolactic fermentation, thus preserving the natural energy of the fruit. After blending, the wine is aged on the lees for six to eight years, followed by an additional rest after disgorging. This prolonged ageing refines the bubbles and accentuates its creamy texture, without dulling its vivacity. Every detail is designed to preserve the essential: the purity of Louis Roederer Cristal Brut Rosé.
Taste
Louis Roederer Cristal Brut Rosé is a silent symphony that unfolds with time and air. To the eye, it is a bright salmon pink, almost amber, with very fine bubbles. On the nose, it opens slowly with notes of ripe red fruits - wild raspberry, redcurrant - that blend with candied citrus, blood orange peel, toasted almond and soft brioche nuances. The palate is surprisingly precise and direct, with a silky texture that caresses the palate. The fruit is juicy but restrained, integrated into a backbone of lively acidity, fine salinity and a chalky minerality that prolongs the finish in an almost ethereal way. Subtle layers of spice, wet chalk, pink grapefruit, white flowers and an echo of candied ginger appear.
