Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The collaboration between artist Okuda San Miguel and winemaker Raúl Perez continues with the 2020 Kolor Okuda San Miguel & Raúl Pérez, a ripe and exuberant Mencía presented in a colorful etched bottle. It was produced with grapes from a vineyard in Villadecanes, and the wine has more finesse. They produced 80 225-liter oak barrels, and the profile achieved is more serious than the initial vintage. Some 20,000 bottles produced.

Features

Description

From the Atlantic mists of Bierzo to the most forgotten corners of Galicia, Raúl Pérez Kolor has walked with earth-stained boots and an intuition that defies manuals. "Kolor" was not born from a marketing plan or a guided tasting: it was born from a hunch. From an old plot in the Valtuille de Abajo area -almost forgotten, with vines in goblet that looked more like sculptures than plants- and from an obsession: to capture not only the fruit, but the soul of the soil.

Raúl Pérez, known for challenging the established, decided to go for an unusual and radical coupage: Mencía for the most part, but also a symphony of indigenous red varieties(Alicante Bouschet, Bastardo, Garnacha Tintorera...), all co-fermented, all in the field. It is a landscape wine, not a recipe wine.

The red clay soils with oxidised slate veins, combined with an Atlantic-mountainous climate, forge an extreme character. Lots of thermal oscillation, morning mists and cleansing breezes. Here, the Mencía is not the textbook variety: there are no concessions to the fruity or the complacent. Raúl knew this, and as in so many other courageous decisions in his career, he decided not to intervene too much. Let the vineyard do the talking. Raúl Pérez Kolor is, in itself, an abstract painting made with grapes: the gesture of an artist who no longer needs to prove anything.

Raúl Pérez Kolor is a special and unique edition, a collaboration between the artist Okuda San Miguel and Raúl Pérez, bottled in a colourful and engraved bottle that reflects the free spirit of the project. The wine was made with grapes from a vineyard in Villadecanes, selecting 50 barrels from that area and 12 more barrels from the Cabanelas area, the largest in Valtuille. This area, with its clay soils and boulders, offers ripe wines, and the objective here was clear: to create a fruity, juicy, immediate and easy-drinking wine. Around 18,000 bottles are produced.

Winemaking

The grapes that give life to Raúl Pérez Kolor are harvested by hand, in small boxes, with an obsessive selection, berry by berry. Fermentation is spontaneous, without inoculation, in open wood truncated cone-shaped tanks. The whole bunches are trodden by foot - yes, as before - and then a prolonged, almost intuitive maceration begins, following the rhythm of the wine rather than the calendar.

The wine is aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels, with no racking, no corrections, no filtering. The only intervention is patience. Then bottled without fining, with a minimum dose of sulphur dioxide. The expression is free, but controlled by experience. Raúl Pérez Kolor is a wine that grows in the shade, without haste.

Taste

In the glass, Kolor does not burst: it insinuates itself. The colour is deep but matt, like a dark canvas on which the brushstroke then appears. The nose is wild but elegant: there are faded violets, Chinese ink, clean leather and that perfume so difficult to describe, reminiscent of noble damp and dried mushrooms. Then comes the fruit, but in a low key: blueberry, pomegranate without sweetness, black plum skin.

On the palate is where the most complex dialogue begins. Tense, austere and rustic with intention. There is vibrant, but not cutting acidity. Rough but measured tannins. A point of rusticity that does not discomfort, but excites. In the background, there is a note of iron and graphite that reminds us of where it comes from: oxidised slate, clay, deep roots.

The palate is long, mineral and earthy, like an echo that resonates on the palate. There is no caress or ease here: there is character, landscape, liquid truth. Raúl Pérez Kolor does not want to please, he wants to challenge. It is a wine to drink slowly, with air, with attention. For those who seek emotion rather than immediate pleasure.
