Description
From the very first steps in the vineyard, the idea of this Premier Cru emerged as a genuine commitment to the purity and expression of the Chablis terroir. Julien Brocard, heir to a tradition that embraces biodynamic viticulture, was inspired by the mineral strength and floral notes of the Kimmeridgien soil to conceive his Montée de Tonnerre. The area - located to the right of the Grand Crus valley - is renowned for squaring the climatic challenge with highly mineralising limestone and marine soils. The courageous decision was to make this last parcel biodynamic; a gesture of loyalty to the terroir, even when others doubted it.
Julien Brocard Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is composed entirely of Chardonnay - as required by the Chablis AOC - and strongly reflects the law of the region: a dry white, traced by vibrant acidity and stony minerality, rather than fruity opulence.
Winemaking
From manual harvest to spontaneous fermentation, the vinification of Julien Brocard Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre follows the winery's biodynamic precepts. Julien uses large 50 hl foudres (Rousseau, Taransaud, Stockinger cooperage) for ageing, avoiding any invasive reference to new oak. This neutral approach ensures that the terroir speaks clearly. The aim is to retain a firm structure, a deep mineral pulse, and only add complexity without any trace of ostentatious oak. The result is an elegant, powerful and vibrant wine with measured but meaningful ageing.
Taste
On the nose, Julien Brocard Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre presents a blooming intensity on a deep mineral base: aromas of white flowers, green apple, and an imprint of wet stone and flint reminiscent of the austerity of the Kimmeridgian landscape. With a little aeration, menthol, aniseed, sea salt and candied lemon zest emerge, while the initial austerity gives way to a full, energetic wine.
The palate is full and structured. There is a sharp minerality, a nervous acidity that gives the wine momentum, while the flavours are articulated between restrained fruit and saline sensations. The persistence is long, with a powerful and vibrant finish of good intensity and grip. A deep, precise, refined yet nervy wine - truly complete and with long potential.
