Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Extra Brut V.P. 2013

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A blend of the 2013, 2012 and 2011 vintages, Egly's latest NV Egly-Ouriet Extra-Brut Grand Cru V.P. was disgorged in spring 2021 with three grams per liter dosage. It's a lovely wine, bursting with aromas of fresh bread, citrus oil, crisp orchard fruit, praline and subtle hints of clear honey and exotic fruits. Full-bodied, layered and textural, it's concentrated and incisive, with a pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish. As ever, this is warmly recommended.

Description
Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Extra Brut V.P. is a sublime expression of Champagne viticulture, remarkable for its composition and winemaking process. This champagne is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, with 50% reserve wine, which contributes to its complexity and depth. Maison Egly-Ouriet, located in the prestigious Montagne de Reims region, is known for its meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Winemaking
The ageing of this champagne is particularly remarkable. The acronym V.P.(Vieillissement Prolongée) indicates extended ageing, allowing the wine to rest on its lees for a longer period. This extended maturation process in the cave, which lasts at least 6 to 7 years, is essential to achieve the desired complexity. This focus on extended ageing is a testament to Egly-Ouriet's commitment to excellence, ensuring that each bottle expresses the characteristic strength and elegance of its champagnes.
Taste
Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Extra Brut V.P. is a champagne that displays remarkable elegance and strength, characteristics that intensify over time. Its flavour profile is a reflection of its unique terroir in Ambonnay, a region known for its chalk-rich soils that give the grapes a distinctive mineral flavour. The combination of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, together with extended ageing, results in a champagne with exceptional complexity and depth of flavour, marked by mineral notes and a rich, refined texture.
The low dosage and focus on extended ageing allow the wine's intrinsic qualities to shine through, offering a tasting experience that is both intense and balanced. This champagne not only represents Egly-Ouriet's excellence in winemaking, but is also a superb example of how terroir and technique can merge to create a truly extraordinary drink.
