Dominio de Atauta La Roza 2016

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2016 La Roza follows the style of the 2014—aromatic and perfumed, with the elegance of the sandy soils. It comes from three plots of vines that they reckon are around 170 years of age (!) and which total only 0.24 hectares. It's elegant and subtle, with the elegant tannins from the sandy soils (there's also clay and limestone here, of course), one of the most elegant wines here, and at the same time, it's very complete. 759 bottles were filled in September 2018.

Description
In the heart of the Atauta Valley, the Dominio de Atauta winery embodies the passion and dedication to recovering the region's oenological jewels. Dominio de Atauta La Roza is a clear example of this, made from three micro-plots of 165-year-old vineyards, planted on ungrafted v ines and spread over just 0.24 hectares at an altitude of 970 metres above sea level. The soil is unique: a top layer of sand giving way to clay and finally a limestone base, which gives the wine its distinctive elegance and minerality.
Winemaking
The elaboration of Dominio de Atauta La Roza is a meticulous process. Each plot is vinified separately and a manual harvest is carried out in 11 kg boxes, followed by a rigorous selection process. Fermentation takes place in 1,000-litre stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, accompanied by cold maceration and careful punching down. Ageing is extended for 18 months in second-use French oak barrels, allowing the tannins to refine without losing the freshness of the wine.
Taste
Dominio de Atauta La Roza offers a tasting experience that enraptures the senses. On the nose, it displays an intense, balsamic bouquet with notes of lemon thyme, wild lavender and ripe red fruit, inviting you to delve deeper with each sip. On the palate, it is extremely elegant with a subtle structure, but with remarkable persistence. The palate is silky, with tannins that leave a chalky sensation and a long, lingering finish, honouring the unique terroir from which it comes.
This wine, limited to just 778 numbered bottles, is a demonstration of the dedication to preserving an unparalleled viticultural heritage and highlights the intimate connection between landscape, history and the art of winemaking.
