The old Garnacha has been renamed with the name of the vineyard where the grapes originate. The 2021 San Rafael fermented in an oak vat with a higher percentage of full clusters and matured in a 2,000-liter Stockinger foudre and 12 used 500-liter oak barrels for 10 months followed by four more months in concrete. It has 13.96% alcohol, a pH of 3.35 and 6.2 grams of acidity denoting very good freshness and moderate ripeness. It has notes of Mediterranean herbs and also a touch of honey and beeswax. The palate is medium to full-bodied with chalky tannins and integrated oak. 10,460 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2023.

Description
Contino Garnacha, a jewel made with care in Rioja Alavesa, combines tradition and exceptional quality. This wine comes from the Pajera(limestone soil, 1980), Central(alluvial and sandy, 1950) and Lentiso(stony, 1940) estates. Each plot contributes a unique character, highlighting the richness and diversity of the Rioja terroir. The Contino winery, the first"chateau" in the region since 1973, is located in a picturesque meander of the Ebro River, in Laserna. Its philosophy is based on production with its own vineyards, a seal of distinction and commitment to quality.
Winemaking
Contino Garnacha is harvested by hand, with a careful selection process both in the field and in the winery. The grapes are placed in French oak vats, where fermentation begins spontaneously after pre-fermentation maceration. Once the alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine rests in contact with the skins for an additional 15 days to enhance its character. Ageing takes place in a large 2,000-litre foudre and in 12 500-litre barrels for 10 months, followed by 5 months in concrete tanks, which gives it a natural refinement and greater freshness.
Taste
When tasting Contino Garnacha, the experience is enveloping. Immediately, notes of ripe red fruits and a floral touch enrich the bouquet. The vibrant acidity and low pH (3.26) reinforce its freshness, highlighting its balanced and flavoursome profile. The presence of wood is measured, leaving a subtle echo that does not overshadow the fruity essence, but rather elegantly enhances it. The result is a dry red wine, with great structure and persistence, which invites to be enjoyed in every glass.
