Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Rocheyron exhibits inviting aromas of blackberries, violets, lavender and spices, framed by nicely integrated new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant, with lovely purity of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, mineral finish. It will rival and perhaps surpass the 2020 as Sisseck's finest to date.

Description

Sometimes great changes are born from the simplest gesture: walking through a vineyard and listening. This is how the recent history of Château Rocheyron began, when Peter Sisseck - the creator of the legendary Pingus in Ribera del Duero -discovered in 2010 this forgotten estate in the upper part of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, a site of limestone soils and gentle slopes in the heart of Saint Émilion. There, together with his friend and partner Silvio Denz, he glimpsed the potential of a terroir with soul, still dormant, but with a pent-up energy that deserved to be awakened.

His decision was radical: to apply the same almost mystical precision that had taken Pingus to the summit of Spanish wine, but in Bordeaux, from a biodynamic point of view, with minimal intervention, seeking purity and transparency. The vines, between 50 and 70 years old, are planted on a thin layer of clay resting on the calcareous bedrock, on elevated terraces, where the constant breeze modulates the high temperatures and preserves a luminous freshness in the grapes. The blend respects the right bank tradition: 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, but its expression is far from routine. Rocheyron does not pretend to be like anyone else, and it shows.

Winemaking

Rocheyron is harvested by hand, with a meticulousness that is more reminiscent of goldsmithing than agriculture. Once in the cellar, the bunches are double sorted, berry by berry. Fermentation is carried out in thermoregulated cement tanks, without the addition of yeast, in order to respect the identity of the vineyard. Extraction is gentle, more infusion than maceration, seeking the finest grain of tannin, that almost aerial texture that characterises great wines.

Rocheyron is aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, mostly used, with a maximum of 30% new wood, always fine-grained. The aim is not to mark the wine, but to frame it, to allow it to breathe and to refine it without make-up. Before bottling, the wine is neither clarified nor filtered. The result is a crystalline reading of the terroir, without embellishment or concessions.

Taste

The first impression on uncorking a bottle of Rocheyron is one of serenity. This Saint Émilion does not need to raise its voice. Its bouquet is deep but restrained, with notes of black plum, graphite, dried lavender and pu-erh tea, all enveloped in a mineral patina reminiscent of warm limestone after rain. As it oxygenates, hints of black truffle, fresh tobacco leaves and a hint of bitter cocoa emerge. But nothing is exuberant or obvious; everything is restrained, like a melody played on mute.

On the palate, Rocheyron displays an ethereal but persistent texture. It enters fluidly, almost like liquid silk, but soon shows its backbone: vibrant acidity, chalky tannin that doesn't scrape but structures, and a salinity that lengthens the finish like a line stretched to infinity. There are fruits, yes - blackberry, black cherry, pomegranate - but they feel infused in earth and wind, not extracted or overloaded. The finish is very long, with an echo of dry stone, pine resin and laurel leaves.

Rocheyron does not seek to dazzle in blind tastings; rather, it whispers to those who know how to listen. It is a wine that reveals itself over time, that changes in the glass, that invites contemplation. A Bordeaux red that, without denying its origins, dares to think differently
