Buy Wine from Château Cos d'Estournel
Château Cos d'Estournel is one of the seven wonders of the world wine scene. As we drive up the D2 road to the commune of Saint-Estèphe, and leaving behind Château Lafite Rothschild, we come across a building reminiscent of Indus in which the pagodas of Cos d'Estournel and elephants carved on stone welcome us. This is the dream of Louis Gaspard d'Estournel, who in 1811, after inheriting a piece of land, founded the château and soon his wines reached as far away as India among others. In 1852, ruined by debts, Louis sold the property to the London bank Martyns and two years later the property received the classification of 2ème Cru Classé at the 1855 World's Fair.
In 1917 the Ginestet family acquires Cos d'Estournel and Bruno Prats will be the future heir who will manage the family business until 2000, when Michel Reybier buys the maison. However, Michel currently has the support of Bruno Prats' son, Guillaume, for the technical management with the commitment to increase the quality of the wines. Changes came quickly from the hand of this promising young spirit with the renovation of the winery facilities; 72 stainless steel truncated cone-shaped tanks of different sizes were designed with two levels per vat and the pumps were eliminated during the movement of the wine since all operations are done by gravity. What was the goal? To vinify the plots separately, respecting oxidation and sudden movements in the wine by gravity.
What is the terroir of Cos d'Estournel like? The vineyard is spread over 91 hectares where deep gravelly soils predominate, perfect for heat retention and rain drainage. In the old Gascon language the word "cos" means hill of pebbles. The Cabernet Sauvignon variety predominates here (60%) followed by Merlot (40%), with a density of 10,000 vines per hectare of an average age of 35 years. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean and the mild temperatures make this winery one of the last in the Médoc region to harvest.
It would be no secret to say that Cos d'Estournel is undoubtedly the winery that makes the best wines in the commune of Saint-Estèphe. What wines does it make? Cos d'Estournel is a thoroughbred wine that combines the tannic strength offered by the soil with a silky and sanguine texture. Spices, cassis, truffle, herbs and smoke are elements that always accompany this great wine; Les Pagodes de Cos is a selection of young vines declassified for the first wine. Licorice, black cherry and fennel are the traits that describe this winning Trojan horse; and Cos d'Estournel Blanc was born in 2005 and is made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The wine ferments in second year French oak barrels, yet respects the exotic fruit (guava and pineapple) and citrusy lemon.
