Buy Wine with Caiño Longo
Caiño Tinto variety has its origins in the Minho province, at the northeast of Portugal. It has medium budding, late ripening and low performance. Is likely to suffer millerandage, downy mildew and sunburn leaf blights. Caiño Tinto is also prone to botrytis cinerea attack. Nevertheless, it endures well droughts and is therefore well adapted to poor soils, but it has difficulty in ripening if grown in cold climates.
Normally, Caiño Tinto wines are ruby coloured, rich in alcohol and acidity. In Spain, this variety is found basically in Galicia, where it seems to be quite fruitful; its clusters are small and packed, with thick-skinned berries. Caiño Tinto wines tend to have high alcoholic content and, as a rule, they are produced by carbonic maceration in order to soften the astringent and bitter tannins typical in this variety. Old vines and limited production can improve the quality of this wine. Quinta da Muradella is one of the Caiño Tinto wine producers
