Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The single-vineyard white 2022 Ededia was sourced from a 0.35-hectare plot of 40-year-old vines planted with the old Godello clone in the zone of Treval in the village of Rubiá, where the soils are rich in clay and limestone (when the majority is slate and alluvial). It fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, where it was kept in contact with the lees for 14 months followed by four months in stainless steel. They picked the grapes very early, on August 28, and the wine still achieved 13.8% alcohol but keeping the balance and freshness. It's a warmer place with a south exposure, and the wine is always riper and more voluptuous. It has riper fruit but keeps the freshness; perhaps the whites reflect the heat of the vintage less than the reds. 1,128 bottles were filled in May 2024.

Description
From its roots in the Valdeorras D.O., Viña Somoza Ededia is born, a pure expression of the old Godello grown in the emblematic Serra da Enciña da Lastra. The idea of making this wine arose from a bold gesture: to rescue a plot of vines over 40 years old on the Treval hillside, at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level, on dry limestone soils. A corner where only oak and stone seem to thrive. The winemaker, a staunch defender of the landscape, wanted to capture an austere elegance, born of the essential. The story goes that an unexpected storm forced the grapes to be harvested at dawn, a decision that imbued the wine with an atypical freshness for a warm vintage. This is how Viña Somoza Ededia was born, 100% Godello, extracted from a micro-terroir that speaks softly but firmly.
Winemaking
The production of Viña Somoza Ededia begins with a manual harvest in 15 kg boxes, carefully selecting each cluster. The grapes undergo cold maceration for 48 hours, followed by gentle pressing and natural static racking. Viña Somoza Ededia is fermented with indigenous yeasts in 500-litre French oak barrels. Subsequently, the wine rests on its fine lees for 10 to 14 months, which gives it texture and depth. In some vintages, it is aged for a few months in stainless steel tanks, helping to preserve its mineral tension and natural freshness.
Taste
Viña Somoza Ededia is a subtle golden colour in the glass. On the nose, it offers notes of ripe white fruit, quince and a chalky minerality that evokes wet stone. Nothing is strident, everything moves in sober registers. On the palate, it is oily but with nerve: crisp acidity and salinity structure a firm, almost athletic passage. The finish is long, with echoes of lime, camomile and chalk. A white wine for lovers of minerality rather than exuberant fruit, ideal for seafood, oily fish and cured cheeses.
This wine does not seek to please everyone. It is an exercise in terroir, a Godello that reflects without make-up the character of Valdeorras: altitude, stone and restraint. Viña Somoza Ededia is a silent jewel, designed for those who enjoy tension, verticality and depth without artifice.
