Trimbach Alsace Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives 2009

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Harboring around 65 grams of residual sugar but still 14% alcohol, Trimbach’s 2009 Pinot Gris Vendange Tardive – from a preponderance of simply over-ripe rather than botrytized fruit – generously delivers brown-spiced, vanilla-tinged quince and apple jelly in the nose and on an initially luscious, oily palate, though a faintly warm and drying sizzle renders its bittersweet finish slightly awkward. I would want to revisit this in a few years to assess its longer-term potential, and although I am confident it will at the very least hold up for 15 years, it is a far-cry from the superb examples of its genre that have been more usual at this address.

Description
Trimbach Alsace Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives is a wine that reflects the patience and tradition of one of Alsace' s most emblematic houses. Sourced from the Kirschberg and Osterberg Grands Crus in Ribeauvillé, this Pinot Gris is made from grapes that remain on the vine until they reach a natural degree of dehydration, which concentrates sugars and aromatic compounds. The result is a wine of unique intensity, halfway between opulence and elegance.
Winemaking
The vinification of the Trimbach Alsace Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives is in the classic Alsace style: fermentation in stainless steel tanks, without malolactic fermentation, in order to preserve the natural acidity of the fruit. After three months of ageing and a long resting period in the cellar, the wine is ready to drink, although it can be aged for more than 10 to 15 years, evolving towards even more complex notes with the passing of time.
Taste
Trimbach Alsace Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives dazzles with a bright golden colour, a harbinger of its aromatic richness. The nose displays a symphony of honey, ripe apricot, candied fruit and caramelised citrus, intertwined with hints of toast, sweet spices, vanilla, marzipan and fresh butter. With aeration, hints of dried fruit and a delicate mineral background that adds depth. Silky and voluptuous on the palate, with an unctuousness balanced by a vibrant acidity that avoids any excess sweetness. Layers of ripe fruit, acacia honey, quince and spices follow one after the other, enveloped in a long, lingering finish, with echoes of dried fruit and a subtle hint of smoke. It is a wine that caresses the palate and leaves an unforgettable impression after each sip.
Ideal with foie gras, blue cheeses, almond pastries or fruit desserts, although it is also fascinating to enjoy Trimbach Alsace Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives on its own, in a large glass, letting it slowly unfold its full repertoire of nuances.
