San Román Malvasía 2022

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
2022 was a year of heat and drought that was saved by a little rain and slightly lower temperatures at the end of the season. The white 2022 Malvasía shows contained ripeness and freshness, with a little higher alcohol (but still at 13%), with freshness and a chalky, mineral finish on the palate, keeping the poise and balance. It comes from ungrafted, 70-year-old vines on sandy soils and fermented in 500-liter oak barrels, where the wine matured for 10 months with periodical bâtonnage. It's floral, spicy and serious, with an austere palate. 4,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.

Description
To speak of San Román Bodegas y Viñedos is to speak of dedication, patience and love for the land. This winery, with a clear philosophy of respect for the vineyard and minimal intervention, gives us wines with soul. Today we would like to talk to you about one of its white jewels: San Román Malvasía.
San Román Malvasía comes from a vineyard more than 60 years old, located in El Monte, at an altitude of 700 metres above sea level. These old vines, planted on ungrafted roots on sandy soils, have survived the passage of time with admirable resilience. And this shows in the wine: elegance, character and impressive expressiveness.
Winemaking
The elaboration of San Román Malvasía is an art. After a 12-hour maceration with skins, the must is left to settle naturally overnight. It is then racked into 500-litre barrels, where it ferments with indigenous yeasts and is aged for 10 months, with periodic bâtonnage to add texture and complexity. Each step is a thoughtful decision, unhurried, without artifice.
Taste
If we close our eyes and taste it, it is like a sea breeze on a summer's day. On the nose, San Román Malvasía envelops us with a saline, subtly floral profile, with notes of white flowers and a background of dried fruits reminiscent of tender almonds. But the best part comes on the palate: freshness, a touch of minerality and that vibrant acidity that makes it straight, long and vertical.
It is not the typical light and casual white wine. It is a serious wine, with structure, but without losing that sparkle that makes us want another sip. Ideal for pairing with seafood, oily fish or even a good cured cheese.
If we are looking for a white wine that speaks of its origin, with personality and a different touch, San Román Malvasía is a safe bet.
