The toasty 2018 Textures de Pedra wants to be the expression of the Mediterranean grapes in the Penedès climate, a blanc de noirs with 50% Xarel·lo Vermell, 25% Sumoll and 25% Bastard Negre (the local strain of Graciano adapted to the place, identified already in the 1920s), a powerful and energetic wine with light and electricity, moderate alcohol and very good acidity. The wine is velvety and dry, with zero sugar and a stony sensation in the palate. It matured in bottle sur lie for no less than 42 months. 10,500 bottles and 717 magnums. It should develop nicely in bottle.

In the heart of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, where the history of sparkling wine is intertwined with the ancestral geology of the Alt Penedès, Raventós i Blanc cultivates much more than vines: it cultivates a thought. The Raventós family, winemakers since 1497, made a bold decision in 2012 to leave the Cava D.O. to found their own appellation, Conca del Riu Anoia. A gesture that seemed reckless, but in reality responded to a deep conviction: to express without concessions the uniqueness of their territory, with wines that speak of origin, not labels.

Raventós i Blanc Textures de Pedra is born of this radical philosophy. It is the house's most textured and enigmatic sparkling wine, made from a rare blend of Xarel.lo Vermell, Xarel.lo and Sumoll, the latter, a red variety vinified in white. The grapes come exclusively from the highest and stoniest part of the estate: Vinya Més Alta, a vineyard planted on calcareous soils with marine fossils, at an altitude of 250 metres above sea level. The Mediterranean climate, moderated by the altitude and mountain breezes, gives freshness and tension, while the structure comes from the effort required by the rocky soil.

Winemaking

Raventós i Blanc Textures de Pedra is harvested by hand, in small boxes, with rigorous selection in the vineyard. The grapes are gently pressed in a vertical press to preserve the aromatic elegance. Each variety is fermented separately with indigenous yeasts, in stainless steel tanks and used oak foudres, seeking textures rather than aromas. The base wine rests on its lees throughout the winter before a second fermentation in the bottle.

Raventós i Blanc Textures de Pedra is then aged for more than 42 months on its lees without the addition of shipping liquor. A Brut Nature without make-up, which is committed to a naked and honest expression of the place it comes from.

Taste

The nose of Raventós i Blanc Textures de Pedra is precise, mineral, sober. Almond zest, grapefruit peel, dried flower, a touch of camomile infusion. There is no fruity exuberance, but a restrained beauty, almost like carved stone. On the palate, Raventós i Blanc Textures de Pedra is dry, taut, with a sharp acidity and a chalky texture that evokes the earth it comes from. Notes of ripe citrus, herbal touches and a saline background that lengthens the finish with austere elegance.
