Description

Pedro Méndez, son of sailors and grandson of winegrowers, grew up between the salty tides of the Pontevedra coast and the old vines of the Salnés Valley. After training in Bordeaux, he returned to Galicia not to replicate what he had learned, but to listen to the land again. "The vineyard already knows what to do, we just get in the way", he often says. In 2012, he decided not to bottle any wine: "I had no tension, I didn't speak clearly". This act of radical honesty marked the birth of Pedro Méndez Tresvellas, made from 100% Albariño, a wine that brings together the soul of three old vines - the "tres vellas" - planted between the 1960s and 1970s on granitic soils on the Atlantic coast, always facing west, where the salty Atlantic wind imprints character and the stone imposes silence.

The combination of sea breezes, persistent rainfall and poor soils naturally limits yields, concentrating each berry in expression and character. Pedro works in regenerative agriculture, without pesticides or herbicides, allowing the ecosystem to regulate itself. The deep roots drink from the stone, and that minerality is transferred intact to the wine.

Winemaking

Pedro Méndez Tresvellas is hand harvested at dawn from centenary vines in Simes, Villalonga and Padriñán, at an altitude of almost 190 m above the Ría de Arousa. The must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, reinforcing its Atlantic character. The wine then ages for ten months on its fine lees in French oak barrels, gaining complexity without losing purity. Finally, Pedro Méndez Tresvellas is filtered very gently, a minimum dose of sulphites is added and it is bottled almost untouched, respecting its natural essence as much as possible.

Taste

Pedro Méndez Tresvellas is sober and firm from the first moment. On the nose, a very subtle citrus fruit: lime peel, white grapefruit, a touch of fennel flower and fresh herbs. All insinuation, never stridency. In the background, a minerality reminiscent of wet stone, decomposed granite.

On the palate, the entry is tense, sharp, almost electric. The acidity sets the pace from the start, with notes of pickled lemon, kumquat and a bitter finish reminiscent of green almonds. The wine is dry, vertical and long. There is salinity, precision and a restrained energy that makes it vibrate on the palate. It does not seek to seduce with sweetness, but with truth. It is an Albariño without concessions, for those who enjoy the edge, the purity, the essential.
