I was amazed at the floral quality, the perfume and elegance of the 2022 Kuusu from Oxer Bastegieta, as the wines from Toro are not usually like this. It has notes of violets and wild berries, reminiscent of a Touriga Nacional, including that grapey quality, which makes me think of Moscatel pulp. It's dark, juicy and velvety, with abundant chalky tannins and a very tasty, supple finish. It was produced with Tinta de Toro, the local strain of Tempranillo, and some 10% white Albillo Mayor from sandy soils rich in quartz. It fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500- and 600-liter French and Austrian barrels for 10 months. 3,800 bottles were filled in September 2023.
