Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The NV Quintero Vidueño, from a solera with overripe grapes but not fortified, was produced with all the varieties from the island. It is different from the one of Quintero Vidueño Viejísimo, which was one demijohn of extremely old and sweet wine they put in very small bottles years ago. This comes in a regular bottle, a blend reflecting more the old wines from Sabinosa, blending older and younger wines, coming through as more balanced and less sweet, more drinkable, with an amber color and an expressive nutty and smoky nose with some iodine notes and some volatility. It has 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.34, 6.9 grams of acidity (through concentration) and only 7.6 grams of sugar that are offset by the high acidity, finishing with saline and bitter notes in the finish. This is for now sold without appellation of origin until they manage to certify these old wines. 966 bottles were filled in June 2024. This is the first blend and is marked with a lot number, but in future bottlings, they should be able to indicate it. It reflects how the traditional wines from El Hierro used to be.

Features

Description

The Bimbache Quintero Vidueño project was born on the remote island of El Hierro, driven by Rayco Fernández, an oenologist determined to rescue the liquid memory of the Canary Islands archipelago. Aware of the heritage value of the traditional wines of El Hierro, he decided to reinterpret them without concessions, blending generations of wine in a single bottle. Thus was born Quintero Vidueño, made with all the island's native varieties, in homage to the solera wines of Sabinosa. The Atlantic climate, the porous volcanic soils and the trade winds define a radical environment where the vines struggle, and therefore express themselves with authenticity. This first edition is bottled without denomination, as a gesture of creative freedom and fidelity to the origin.

Elaboration

Bimbache Quintero Vidueño comes from an active solera that blends old and young wines from overripe, unfortified grapes. With 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.34 and 6.9 g/l of acidity, it maintains only 7.6 g/l of residual sugar, which is barely perceptible thanks to its verticality. The ageing is carried out in old casks, demijohns and amphorae, allowing a slow evolution, with controlled oxidation and no make-up.

Taste

In the glass, Bimbache Quintero Vidueño has a bright amber colour. The nose is complex and saline: nutty, soft smoke, an echo of iodine and dried citrus peel. On the palate, it is dry and taut, with vibrant acidity that cuts through the unctuousness of old wines. There are hints of dried figs, ripe apricot, toasted almonds and a mineral background of ash. The finish is long, saline and bitter, with notes of dried herbs and hot stone. Bimbache Quintero Vidueño is an extreme, honest wine that avoids complacency. Ideal for those who are looking for depth and memory in their glass, beyond immediate pleasure.
