Description
Alphonse Mellot La Moussière Rouge is an exquisite expression of French viticulture, specifically from the Sancerre region in the Loire Valley. This wine is made exclusively from Pinot Noir, a variety noted for its elegance and complexity. The vines, between 5 and 45 years old, are spread over an area of 5.5 hectares, with a planting density varying between 9,000 and 10,000 feet per hectare.
Winemaking
The production of Alphonse Mellot La Moussière Rouge is a meticulous process that begins with the manual harvesting of the bunches in small 25 kg crates to ensure the integrity of the fruit. After a rigorous selection, the whole bunches are transferred to wooden truncated cone-shaped vats for maceration and fermentation. This process includes a cold maceration of 5 to 10 days, followed by fermentations at temperatures not exceeding 28°C, a key practice to preserve the aromas of Pinot Noir. The total length of vatting is approximately 4 weeks.
The wine then undergoes an ageing process in oak barrels, with a percentage of new barrels varying between 80 and 100%. This ageing on fine lees lasts between 10 and 18 months, which contributes to the complexity and structure of the wine.
Taste
Alphonse Mellot La Moussière Rouge is characterised by its depth and richness. On the nose, intense aromas of red and black fruits such as raspberry, blackcurrant, blackberry and cherry, complemented by spicy notes of pink pepper, vanilla and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is round and smooth, with a well-defined structure. The spicy and fruity flavours intertwine harmoniously with a touch of wood, resulting in a long and pleasant wine.
