Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The reds are released much later than the whites, so I tasted the 2017 Abadía de Gomariz and also the 2015 vintage of this red wine this time. This 2017, a ripe blend of Sousón, Brancellao, Ferrol and Mencía from the Gomariz village, still has the imprint of the 12 months it spent in second use 500-liter oak barrels. I don't know exactly why, but the reds here are always marked by the élevage. It has abundant, slightly dusty tannins. For fans of the style. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2020.

Description
In the heart of the Avia Valley, where monks cultivated vines more than a thousand years ago, Abadía de Gomariz was born, a wine that embodies the mineral and spiritual memory of the deepest Ribeiro. It was Xosé Lois Sebio, a non-conformist oenologist and restless soul, who decided to recover this historic terroir, where the granite emerges like an open wound in the earth and the Atlantic climate imprints character. While others opted for the modern, Sebio replanted almost forgotten native varieties -Sousón, Brancellao, Ferrol and Mencía -convinced that the future of the Ribeiro should be born from its past.
An anecdote that reveals his spirit: during a difficult vintage, he refused to chemically treat the vines, even at the cost of losing part of the harvest. "I prefer an austere truth to a made-up lie", he said. This fidelity to the soil and to time can be perceived in every bottle of Abadía de Gomariz: old vines on soils of granitic sands, clay and schist, cultivated organically, with absolute respect for biodiversity. This corner of the Ribeiro, with its morning mist and grazing light, offers a slow and deeply mineral maturity.
Winemaking
Harvesting for Abadía de Gomariz is carried out manually in 18 kg boxes, followed by meticulous selection in the winery. The grapes undergo a cold pre-fermentation maceration and are fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Frequent pumping over and punching down are applied to extract the best from the fruit.
The wine is aged for 12 months in used 300-litre French and American oak barrels. This ageing adds structure and complexity without hiding the varietal freshness. Before its release to the market, Abadía de Gomariz rests for a minimum of 6 months in the bottle, where it is rounded and refined.
Taste
In the glass, Abadía de Gomariz has a bright purple-red colour. On the nose, it displays red and black fruits -cherry, blackberry-, together with spicy notes, smoky touches and hints of undergrowth. Its perfume is complex but restrained.
The palate is juicy, with polished tannins, good acidity and a long, mineral finish. The Sousón adds nerve, the Brancellao elegance, the Ferrol structure and the Mencía freshness. An enveloping wine, with echoes of sweet spices, graphite and aromatic herbs. Ideal for spicy white meats, small game or baked fish. A Galician red wine of character, pause and depth.
