The Emrich Schönleber winery has roots going back more than 250 years in viticulture, although its transformation into its present form began in the late 1960s. This winery is located in Monzingen, situated on the western edge of the Nahe wine region. Although viticulture has been a tradition in the family since the mid-18th century, it was in recent decades that the winery acquired its current prestige. The Schönleber family has been behind Emrich Schönleber wines since the very beginning.
Today, the winery is run by Frank Schönleber, who is also the regional chairman of the Nahe VDP section.Vineyards
The Emrich Schönleber winery has approximately 20 hectares of vineyards, mainly in the renowned municipalities of Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen. These vineyards are planted 85% with Riesling grapes and the remaining 15% with Pinot varieties, including Grauburgunder and Weissburgunder. The terroir of these vineyards is particularly special. Halenberg, with its south-facing orientation and slopes of up to 70%, has a stony soil characterised by blue slate and quartzite. These conditions place high demands on the vines, but in return, they produce wines with a salty mineral nature and flavours reminiscent of green citrus fruits. Over time, these wines develop a characteristic juniper aroma with herbal and spicy hints. On the other hand, Frühlingsplätzchen has soils consisting mainly of red slate and pebbles, interspersed with red clay. The wines from this region are expressive and lively in their youth, but with time, their subtle minerality becomes more pronounced.
