Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The nose of the 2024 Zarate shows something savory, with a clear influence from the sea breeze and an almost salty twist in the finish. This is, of course, their flagship Albariño that always shows the character of the year, here very complete, with good ripeness, 13% alcohol and a very balanced mouthfeel. This is clean and precise, harmonious and elegant, with the chalky, slightly grainy finish from the granite soils. It's superb at this price point.

Description
Zárate Albariño was born in the heart of the Salnés Valley, in the heart of Rías Baixas, where the Zárate family has been growing Albariño for seven generations. This wine is not a coincidence, but the natural consequence of an unwavering philosophy: minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery, absolute respect for the environment, and a constant search for authenticity. Eulogio Pomares, alma mater of the winery, opted for organic viticulture when few in Galicia were still talking about it. His decision to abandon herbicides and systemic products was not welcomed by everyone, but today the living soils, full of micro-life, bear witness to a vision ahead of its time.
The Albariño grape, the absolute protagonist, is grown in its own plots on poor soils of decomposed granite, very draining, which force the plant to go deep and express itself with nerve and tension. The Atlantic climate, with frequent rainfall and mild temperatures, shapes a profile of vertical freshness and sharp minerality. This wine is made with grapes from vines over 35 years old, many in traditional Galician pergola, which provide complexity and natural balance.
Winemaking
Zárate Albariño is vinified exclusively in stainless steel to preserve varietal purity and terroir identity. The grapes are harvested by hand, with a rigorous selection in the vineyard, and gently pressed without destemming, seeking a delicate extraction. The must ferments with indigenous yeasts at a low temperature, and the wine is then left for 3 to 6 months on its fine lees, without batonnage, in a process that adds texture and depth without losing precision. It is not clarified, is naturally stabilised and is gently filtered before bottling.
Taste
From the glass, Zárate Albariño is austere, with no fruity overtones. The first thing is a subtle note of reduction reminiscent of hot stone after rain. With some air, aromas of lime peel, white grapefruit and sea salt burst forth. There is no tropical exuberance, but a restrained elegance that will win the hearts of purists. The palate is a whiplash of sharp acidity, pure Galician electricity. The wine glides like a razor blade across the tongue, leaving behind a trail of fresh herbs(lemon balm, mint), lemon zest and a sharp, almost tactile salinity. The finish is dry, very long, with an echo of stone fruit barely hinted at and a tension that invites the next sip. A radical and sincere Albariño, ideal for those looking for wines with a fierce identity and uncompromising Atlantic character.
