I find the 2022 Ultreia La Claudina to be a lot more subtle and elegant. It comes from a vintage when the vines delivered very healthy grapes and a larger crop. They had to wait to harvest the grapes because the higher yield meant the plants had problems to ripen all the fruit. The palate is elegant and fresh, with clean flavors and precision. 2,300 bottles produced.

Description

Ultreia La Claudina is a single varietal Godello aged white wine produced by the winery and vineyards Raúl Pérez Viticultor, in the D.O. Bierzo, in Spain.
The Godello grapes come from a goblet-planted vineyard at 590 metres above sea level dating back to 1995, located in Valtuille de Abajo, in Villafranca del Bierzo. This is the birthplace of Raúl Pérez, considered the most renowned winemaker on the wine scene today.
The composition of the soils is sandy and clay-limestone, immersed in a Mediterranean-influenced climate, which provides many of the qualities of this white wine.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand at optimum ripeness. The must undergoes spontaneous fermentation in 700 litre oak barrels without temperature control.
It isaged for 12 months in 300 and 500 litreFrench oak barrels (3, 4 and 5 years old). Finally, it is bottled without fining or filtering.

Taste

Ultreia La Claudina is a white wine with a fruity and very elegant aroma. In the mouth it is ripe, with adequate acidity and personality.

For the renowned oenologist Raúl Pérez, one of the architects of the oenological revolution in Spain, a minimum of influence must be exerted on the grapes so that they can express their full potential.
For this reason, Ultreia La Claudina is a distinguished, nuanced, limited-productionwine that is well worth tasting.
This wine pairs wonderfully with grilled red shrimp, creamy cheeses, blue fish, white fish and any grilled or cooked seafood.
