Description
In the hills of Baix Penedès, where the limestone mingles with the sea breeze and the vineyard speaks louder than the winemaker, Eduard Pié -the restless mind behind Sicus-allows himself a creative inflection here. Accustomed to working with singular vineyards and surgical microvinifications, he decides with Sicus A Wine Work Orange Pét Nat to break his own norm. This wine does not come from one place, but from many; it does not respond to a plan, but to an intuition. It is, in his own words, "an exercise in freedom". From the noble remains of different vinifications -Cartoixà, Cartoixà Vermell, Malvasia and Macabeu -comes this irreverent blend that celebrates the gesture, the moment, the residue turned into essence. There is no heresy, but respect. No discard, but opportunity.
Winemaking
The vinification of Sicus A Wine Work Orange Pét Nat is based on an unusual premise: to make the most of what remains in the tanks after devatting the Sicus microvinifications. The whole bunches are pressed, still with their skins, and the must is left to infuse slowly for between 8 and 90 days, depending on the desired extraction. There are no fixed recipes, only careful listening. After this prolonged maceration, the wine spends 40 days in clay amphorae, respecting the natural porosity of the material, which allows for subtle micro-oxygenation. It then matures for 8 months in stainless steel tanks, without additives or corrections. Fresh must is then added just before bottling, which generates a second spontaneous fermentation in the bottle: this is how the natural bubbles of Sicus A Wine Work Orange Pét Nat are born, lively and irregular. It is not filtered, it is not stabilised, it is not tamed. Only 3,350 bottles are bottled, with just 9% alcohol. An honest, raw wine.
Taste
On the nose, Sicus A Wine Work Orange Pét Nat surprises: it does not seek to please, but to provoke. Dried citrus peel, camomile flower, Mediterranean herbs and a whisper of fermented tea. Nothing is obvious. On the palate, the natural bubbles are fine but nervous, supporting a vibrant acidity and a tense passage, with a fruit skin texture and saline background. It is more reminiscent of an infusion than a classic wine: notes of dried apricot, raw almond, and that slightly bitter touch that awakens the palate. The finish is long, dry, with an almost electric energy that invites you to keep drinking. It is a wine to unlearn, to listen to the unexpected, to accompany lively dishes or simply to drink without prejudice. An orange wine, yes, but above all a declaration of principles.
