Description
Niepoort Concise Red is an interpretation of the character and potential of a century-old vineyard. In September 2012, Dirk Niepoort visited the Dão region and came across an almost century-old vineyard. This vineyard, with east-facing granitic soils on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela, and tended by an old farmer, was at the perfect moment to be harvested. In 2014, together with Sergio Silva they bought this 200-year-old quinta called Lomba. From here they started the transition of the vineyards to biodynamics, completing the certification in 2018. For the white varieties they grow Bical, Encruzado and Malvasia. For red grapes they have Baga, Jaen (Mencia), Tinta Pinheira and Alfrocheiro.
Winemaking
With the help of Álvaro de Castro, from Quinta da Pellada, the grapes were vinified in a wine press. The wine was vinified with a long-lasting maceration, but practically without extraction, and 50% of the clusters were used. It fermented for 27 days and then aged for 20 months in a 2,500-litre oak foudre. It was bottled without filtration or fining.
Today Conciso Tinto ferments naturally in granite lagares and then ages in oak casks for 20-22 months.
Taste
Conciso Tinto is light in colour with violet tones. It has a very fresh aroma with hints of spice and some floral notes. Deep and complex, with an intense mineral profile. The palate is harmonious, with a good acidity/alcohol balance. The tannins are fine and delicate, its medium concentrated structure and mineral freshness make this wine very easy to drink.
