Description
In the heart of the Ribeiro, where the Avia river meanders between gentle hills and morning mists, Coto de Gomariz is born, a project that is both vindication and resistance. Here, Xosé Lois Sebio and his team cultivate vines the way they tend an ancient garden: with patience, intuition and a deep connection with the soil. Their vision is clear - to recover the essence of the Ribeiro -and they do so by using native varieties and biodynamic practices that restore the wine to its primitive character.
The inspiration for this Galician white wine came after a particularly dry vintage, in which the Treixadura showed unusual tension. Sebio decided not to soften or correct, but to let the wine express itself without concessions. The result is a blend where Treixadura acts as the backbone, complemented by Godello, Loureira and a subtle touch of Albariño. The vines, between 25 and 70 years old, grow in granitic and clay-ferrous soils, rich in minerals and memory. The Atlantic climate, with warm days and cool nights, gives the wine a unique vibrancy.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, selecting each cluster in small boxes. After a gentle destemming, the grapes undergo a short skin maceration to extract aromatic finesse. Spontaneous fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures. The Coto de Gomariz wine then rests for six months on its fine lees, with light bâtonnage, seeking volume without losing tension. It is bottled with minimal intervention, without aggressive fining or technological make-up.
Taste
On the nose, the Coto de Gomariz wine is sober, almost austere. With air, it reveals notes of citrus peel, dried white flower, tender almond and a salinity that evokes wet stone. Nothing is obvious. Everything is insinuation.
On the palate, the attack is firm and sharp. The acidity marks the passage with surgical precision. Flavours of lime, green pear, grapefruit and a delicate herbal background - fennel, fresh bay leaf -emerge and add complexity. The texture is creamy but taut, like silk on granite. The finish is long, dry, with a persistent minerality reminiscent of the purest Ribeiro terroir.
An honest, profound, uncompromising Atlantic wine. Demanding but enormously rewarding. For those who seek not only freshness, but truth in a Galician white wine.
