Description
The history of Succés Vinícola was born with the fresh and daring impulse of a new generation of Catalan winegrowers. Aida and Albert, in their early twenties when they founded the winery in 2011, decided to focus on the indigenous, minimally intervened, and forgotten inland landscapes of Conca de Barberà, in Tarragona. Their vision was not dictated by trends, but by a deep connection with the old inherited vines and a total confidence in the expressive potential of local varieties such as Trepat, the undisputed queen of the area.
Succés Vinícola La Cuca de Llum (firefly in Catalan) is a declaration of intent. A wine that takes its name from the insect that illuminates the rural night - a perfect symbol of what this project represents: light in the discreet, intensity without stridency. The grapes come from small plots at altitude (between 450 and 600 metres), where Trepat is grown in calcareous clay and slate soils under a continental climate with a marked Mediterranean influence. It is a variety historically relegated to base wines for Cava, but here it shines with its own voice: light, spicy, elegant, as if it were a Pinot Noir aged under the dry sun.
Winemaking
True to its minimalist philosophy, Succés Vinícola vinifies with an almost invisible intervention. The grapes are harvested by hand, seeking freshness rather than full ripeness, and transported in small crates so as not to crush the fruit. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, in stainless steel tanks, and whole or semi-stemmed bunches are used, depending on the vintage, to preserve the freshness and structure of the skins.
The maceration is short, just 20 days, extracting just enough: pale colour, subtle aromas, filigree tannin. Subsequently, the wine rests for several months in steel tanks and partly in fibreglass tanks, without fining or filtering, with a minimum dose of sulphur at bottling. An honest process, without make-up, that lets the terroir speak without the oenologist's hand interrupting the discourse.
Taste
Succés Vinícola La Cuca de Llum is a red wine that seems to float. As soon as you pour it, you are greeted by a clean, airy nose, with notes of crunchy red fruits - raspberry, redcurrant - and a faint floral profile, like dried rose and wild carnation. Then the spicy heart of the Trepat unfolds: white pepper, clove, a hint of dried bay leaf, always on a mineral background reminiscent of dry earth and hot stone at sunset.
On the palate it is a filigree: juicy entry, light passage, with a vibrant acidity that gives it nerve and pushes it towards a long, almost saline finish, where notes of pomegranate and bitter orange peel emerge. No invasive wood, no unnecessary density. Just an honest, upright red, one of those that you drink faster than you expect.
It is a wine for tables with conversation, for light autumn dishes (mushrooms, poultry, mild cured meats), and for those who seek emotion in subtlety. Like a firefly, it illuminates without noise. A wine that does not need to shout to be unforgettable.
