Description
Fernando Remírez de Ganuza founded his winery in 1989 in Samaniego, Rioja Alavesa, with a clear idea: only the best clusters, and only the noblest part of each one, deserve to be part of his wines. He was a pioneer in separating the "shoulders" and "tips" of the bunch, vinifying only the shoulders -more exposed to the sun and more balanced ripening- for Remírez de Ganuza Reserva. A daring technique at the time, today a symbol of his obsessive precision.
Remírez de Ganuza Reserva is made from vineyards over 60 years old, spread over several plots in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria. Poor, clay-limestone based soils, which limit the vigour of the plant and concentrate the varietal expression. The 90% Tempranillo is balanced with 10% Graciano, providing tension and structure. Atlantic climate with continental influence: cool, wide temperature range and slow ripening.
Winemaking
The grapes for Remírez de Ganuza Reserva are harvested by hand, in small boxes, and then cooled at 4-6 ºC for 24 hours. After a rigorous double selection, only the de-stemmed shoulders are vinified. The fermentation of Remírez de Ganuza Reserva is carried out in stainless steel and concrete tanks, and the malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels. The wine is aged for 26 months in 225-litre French oak: 58% new and 42% second use.
Taste
In the glass, Remírez de Ganuza Reserva is sober, deep, without artifice. Aromas of black fruit in liqueur, undergrowth, blond tobacco, clove and an elegant incense background. The wood is present but well integrated. Silky on the palate, with precise acidity and ripe tannins that add tension. Long, with a mineral and spicy echo on the finish. A classic, refined red wine that needs time and silence to unfold everything it has inside.
