Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The single-vineyard 2022 Peña Caballera shows high ripeness and 15% alcohol, reflecting the conditions of the year quite faithfully. It's from 1.5 hectares of old vines in the higher part of Marañones at 850 meters in altitude and with a north-facing exposure where the grapes achieved high ripeness. The ripeness detected on the nose doesn't quite show on the palate, where the granite texture dominates. It perhaps doesn't have the finesse and filigree of the cooler years, with a slightly larger grain and a dry and persistent stony finish. It has more moderate freshness and acidity. It fermented with full clusters in a 2,100-liter concrete vat and matured in a 1,500-liter oak vat for 15 months. 2,000 bottles were filled in the spring of 2024.

Description
Located in the Sierra de Gredos, southwest of Madrid, the Marañones project was born as a declaration of principles: to recover heroic mountain vineyards, preserve native grape varieties, and to vindicate a form of viticulture that listens rather than imposes. Its creator, Fernando García, is part of the new generation of Spanish winegrowers who have opted for the essentials: minimal intervention, extreme respect for the environment and a profound reading of the terroir.
Marañones Peña Caballera comes from a single plot located at an altitude of 850 metres above sea level on decomposed granite soils, on the most austere slopes of San Martín de Valdeiglesias (Vinos de Madrid DO). Such an extreme location that, for years, it was discarded due to its difficulty in ripening. But Fernando, obsessed with elegance and energy in his wines, opted for it precisely because of its difficulty. here the Garnacha does not give in easily," he said, "you have to convince it".
Marañones Peña Caballera is 100% Garnacha, but with an absolutely unusual expression: fine, aerial, almost transparent. A Garnacha of Altura, aged among rockroses, thyme and the Dureza mineral of exposed granite. Extreme climates - with cold winters and dry summers - provide tension, while cool mountain nights ensure vibrant acidity. All with an extremely selective manual harvest, always carried out at the edge of ripeness.
Winemaking
The winemaking of Marañones Peña Caballera follows the principle of minimal intervention, but with surgical precision. The grapes enter the winery in small boxes, are partially destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in open oak vats. Extraction work is minimal: only gentle punching down, in order to preserve the fragility of the fruit and not to extract excessive tannins.
Ageing is carried out in used oak vats for about 12 months, without unnecessary racking or aggressive sulphites. The wine is bottled without fining or filtering, respecting its integrity and natural pulse. Every decision in the winemaking process is guided by a philosophy that is more Burgundian than Mediterranean : capture the site, not impose the hand.
Taste
Marañones Peña Caballera is a whisper in a world of shouting. A wine that does not seek to impress by volume, but by purity, depth and a tense verticality that makes it unique in its kind.
The nose is ethereal and subtle, with aromas that evoke pomegranate skin, dried flowers, warm stone and a distant echo of scrubland. There is no overripeness, no gourmand fruit. Instead, an austere, fine, almost spiritual fragrance, where the Garnacha is stripped of all artifice.
The palate is sharp, direct, saline, with a surprising acidity that supports an agile and electric structure. The granite is felt in every sip: in the fine texture, in the mineral dryness that gently scrapes the palate, in that lingering finish that leaves an aftertaste of stone dust and dried citrus peel.
There are no concessions. No make-up. Just a landscape in a liquid state, captured with the patience and respect of someone who knows that wine, when it is true, is not constructed... it reveals itself.
