Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 A Graña comes from a vineyard in the parish of Adina, and it has a different personality, not only because of its lower alcohol level (11.7%), contained ripeness and higher acidity but because it fermented and matured in a chestnut barrel (and 200 liters in stainless steel), kept with lees for nine months. The nose has a different profile, spicy and with notes of ... chestnut flowers?, with a slightly wild/rustic edge that I love. The palate is bright and vibrant, with effervescent acidity that makes you salivate. This is a collaboration with Jos-e Manuel Domínguez and Adrián Guerra with grapes from the Xesteiriña vineyard. 1,256 bottles and 13 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

Description

On the coastal limits of Sanxenxo, where the Atlantic Ocean imprints character and the salty breeze shapes the landscape, Nanclares Prieto A Graña is born, an Albariño that does not seek to please everyone, but to speak with its own voice. Nanclares and Prieto, faithful to a philosophy of minimal intervention and organic agriculture, found in this small plot -of just a few hectares on sandy soils and granodioritic subsoil- a jewel that defies the conventional notion of Galician white wine. When many producers were chasing volume and exuberance, they decided to listen to the vineyard, even when that meant giving up comfort or yield. A Graña is not a wine of concessions. It is the result of a radical commitment to the identity of a place and a variety: 100% Albariño, from vines between 15 and 35 years old, in the most Atlantic subzone of Rías Baixas, Val do Salnés.

Winemaking

The harvest of Nanclares Prieto A Graña is done by hand, in small boxes, and the whole grapes are gently pressed in a pneumatic press, without destemming. The must ferments in old Castaño barrels (75%) - a local wood that provides unmarked texture with toasted aromas - and in stainless steel tanks (25%). Ageing takes place for 9 months on its lees, with weekly bâtonnage for the first three months. There is no fining or stabilisation, just gentle filtration and a minimal touch of sulphur dioxide. The whole process is designed to preserve the wine's natural tension, energy and saline character.

Taste

On the nose, Nanclares Prieto A Graña presents itself with elegant restraint: taut citrus, lime peel, hints of grapefruit, sea salt, wet granite, raw almond and an almost balsamic background of Atlantic herbs. There is no facile perfume or sweet fruit: minerality and precision dominate here. On the palate, the wine enters with vibrant, sharp, almost surgical acidity. Its texture, however, is enveloping, thanks to the lees work, which gives it volume without losing edge. The finish is long, saline, with a delicate, refreshing bitterness, reminiscent of fennel and lemon zest. A single estate Albariño, radical and pure, it demands attention and rewards with character.
