Buy Wine from Château Grand Puy Lacoste
Historical records date Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste in the 16th century with the acquisition of land by Monsieur Guiraud in the commune of Pauillac. One of the daughters received the property as a dowry when she married Monsieur Jehan, who belonged to the family dynasty that owned Château Lynch Bages at the time. Due to the various female successions of the Jehan family, the wines for a while were labeled as Château Grand Puy Saint Guirons, until one of the daughters married François Lacoste and it is at this moment when the wines of the domaine receive the name of Château Grand Puy Lacoste until today. Let us remember that in those times, as was the tradition, the châteaux took the surname of the husbands when the heir daughters married them, and for this reason the names of the properties changed frequently as the nuptials took place.
The phylloxera crisis hit the Hong Kong dollarpean continent hard and many Bordeaux owners, faced with heavy economic reinvestments in the vineyard, were forced to sell their properties; in 1932 Pierre Frédéric Lacoste, ruined by phylloxera, transferred the reins of the business to the Dupin family. The latter will keep the property active until 1978, when François-Xavier Borie, son of Ducru-Beaucaillou, definitively acquires Grand Puy Lacoste .
The French word "Puy"means hill or mound, and for this reason the winery is called " puy" because a large part of the vineyard is located on a small hill. The 55 hectares of planted vines, with an average age of 38 years and an average density of 10,000 plants per hectare, are composed of pebble soils mixed with sand and some clay. The particularity of the boulder soils is the absorption of heat from the sun's rays emitted during the day, which favors the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
With the 1855 classification established by Napoleon, the Grand Puy Lacoste terroirs receive a 5ème Cru Classé label. However, the quality of the latest vintages positions the estate's wines well above others of higher rank and at very daring prices.
Grand Puy Lacoste produces only two wines: Château Grand Puy Lacoste is one of the great classic Pauillac wines where the tannic breed of Cabernet Sauvignon intermingles with aging aromas such as cigar box, vanilla and cassis. A precious wine that will appreciate the wait to be tasted in optimal conditions; and Lacoste Borie, the second wine resulting from a selection of those vineyards that do not participate in the first wine. As is evident, the percentage of new barrels is lower (30%) although the aging times are exactly the same.
