Buy Wine from Bodegas Benjamín Rothschild Vega Sicilia
You still don't know the Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia wineries, they are very well known and with only two types of wine! Yes, what wines...
This winery is the result of the collaboration between Benjamin Rothschild (president of the financial group LCF Rothschild, co-owner of Château Lafite, multifaceted, and wine lover who also collaborates with the Rupert family in South Africa and Michel Rolland and Laurent Dassault in Argentina) and the Alvarez family, owners of the emblematic Bodegas Vega Sicilia.
They have about 100 hectares, most of them located in the municipality of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. They are now building the winery northeast of Samaniego, in a neighborhood called "San Millán", less than two kilometers from the town center.
The history of the winery
Macán was formed in 2004 as a result of the merger between Tempos Vega Sicilia and Compañía Vinícola Barón Edmond de Rothschild. Both companies wanted to create exquisite wines in La Rioja, a traditional wine region.
It took 5 years of research and acquisition of land and vineyards to produce their first vintage of wines in 2009. The first bottles were released in 2013.
In Samaniego they have a winery with contemporary enotechnical equipment and an energy efficiency system based on solar panels and biomass since 2016.
Great innovations
Oenotechnical innovations allow for strict selection of clusters and grapes, temperature control in all areas of the winemaking process, machinery for grape integrity, exhaustive fermentation and wine preservation controls, and microvinification systems for testing by parcel, variety or different winemaking techniques, as well as modern occupational safety systems.
The winery and its natural elements
The style and shape of the winery, developed by Spanish architect Enrique Johansson, is a curious fact. The winery covers an area of 10,000 m2, with some 40,000 m2 of land and several service areas. It is divided into three interconnected buildings:
The Agua building, which houses the grapes and the winemaking process, with 45 10,000-liter oak and stainless steel tanks.
The Earth building, which houses the barrel and bottle aging area.
The Sol building, which houses the offices and the product shipping area.
The facilities have a capacity of 350,000 bottles per year.
Its excellent wines
They make two wines, as is customary in Bordeaux, a first wine, Macan, which is powerful, robust and complex, and a second wine, Macan Classic, which is made from the remains of the first and has a simpler profile but symbolizes the region.
The name of the wine derives from the word macán, which is used colloquially to refer to the inhabitants of San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
Haven't you tried either of these two exquisite wines yet? You're already late!
