Winemaking
Skin soaking for 12 hours with destemmed grapes. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels. Aged for 9 months in 225, 500 and 600 litre barrels.
Description
In the upper part of Bierzo, in the small village of Pieros, Verónica Ortega found much more than a 38-year-old vineyard: she found an echo. A deep, mineral echo rising from the sandy soils at an altitude of 500 metres, reflecting a less noisy, more essential Bierzo. It was there that Verónica Ortega La Llorona was born, not as a lament, but as a crystalline whisper that speaks of the purest Godello, small-grained and respectfully cultivated, like everything Verónica touches.
Trained in great houses such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or Comando G, Ortega has risk in her blood. For La Llorona, she opted to vinify a singular plot with minimal practices, respecting the expression of its origin. The Godello -that variety so often domesticated in excess- is here untamed and vibrant, driven by the freshness of the vintage and the sandy soul of the soil.
Winemaking
The work in the cellar is as sober as it is meticulous. The grapes that give life to Verónica Ortega La Llorona are gently destemmed, followed by a short pellicular maceration, just one night, enough to tighten the aromatic profile without blurring it. The wine is delicately racked to avoid any loss of expression. Spontaneous fermentation is carried out without additives, leaving the yeasts in the environment to do their work. Ageing takes place for 10 months in a palette of large barrels: 1000L, 600L, 500L and some of 225L, all used, seeking to provide oxygenation without marking with wood. The choice of these volumes and times is not accidental: it is an almost surgical decision to protect the purity and precision of the wine.
Flavour
The result is Verónica Ortega La Llorona, a Godello that does not shout, but leaves its mark. The nose opens with subtle notes of toasted pipe and dried flowers - camomile, clean hay - over a background of peach skin and hints of fennel. The citrus notes are fine, like lime zest on wet stone. On the palate, it stretches with tension and grace: juicy, acidic and crisp fruit, wrapped in a delicate salinity that accompanies it all the way to the finish. It is a wine of fine architecture, almost transparent, that conveys with surgical precision the freshness of its vintage and the personality of its vineyard. Pure vivacity, without adornment or artifice, like a Bierzo landscape filtered by the September light.
