Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The village red 2022 Valtuille Vino de Villa has a moderate 12.92% alcohol and lots of finesse, with floral notes of violets, good freshness and tension from the very fine tannins. It has a spark and is vibrant, a wine with complexity from the blend of the different terroirs. It fermented with 30% full clusters and matured in well-seasoned, neutral barrels of different sizes—225-, 400- and 500-liter barrels. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024. It has the balance and elements for a very positive development in bottle. As good as the 2021.

Description
Raúl Pérez has never been a conventional winemaker. Instead of following the dictates of the market, he preferred to listen to the whispers of the deep Bierzo, the old vines and the slate soils of Valtuille de Abajo, where he was born and where he continues to make his wines as if each bottle were an act of faith. Valtuille Vino de Villa is the most honest and direct reflection of this terroir: a red wine from Bierzo that does not aim to impress, but to excite.
This red wine is born from a mosaic of plots surrounding the village, with Mencía vines (mainly), but also with touches of Alicante Bouschet, Bastardo (Trousseau), Garnacha Tintorera and other indigenous varieties that survive as botanical relics among the rows. The vines are between 60 and 100 years old, many of them bush vines, planted in soils of clay, sand and decomposed slate, at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level. The orientation and the Atlantic breeze from the north-west give nuances to the ripening process, producing fresh, tense wines with a personality that is far removed from the stereotype of ripe red wines from the interior of the peninsula.
Raúl took the risky decision not to intervene more than necessary. In a particularly hot vintage, when many opted to harvest early for fear of over-ripening, he waited. "The vineyard asked me to do so," he said in his calm tone. And he was right: the grapes arrived in perfect balance, with that vibrant acidity and tannic finesse that defines great Bierzo reds.
Winemaking
The grapes for Valtuille Vino de Villa are harvested by hand, with a meticulous selection in the vineyard itself, cluster by cluster. Once in the winery, the bunches of grapes are whole, without destemming, starting a spontaneous fermentation with autochthonous yeasts. The maceration is slow, with hardly any pumping over, allowing the must to take what it needs from the skins and stems, without violence, without haste.
After fermentation, the wine is transferred by gravity to used oak vats, where it is aged for about 12 months. There is no fining or stabilisation, just a light filtration before bottling. Each bottle of Valtuille Vino de Villa is a liquid photograph of that year, of that soil, of that silence that can only be heard among old vines at sunset.
Taste
From the first contact in the glass, Valtuille Vino de Villa is a wine of restrained depth. Nothing is obvious, everything is suggested. The nose is earthy, fragrant and subtly floral. Notes of wild raspberry, dried tobacco leaf, violet and a background of wet clay reminiscent of the place it comes from. There is no make-up, just transparency.
On the palate, the wine enters with a deceptive lightness. Its fluidity is almost aquatic, but it quickly expands, firm, with a structure that clings to the palate like a web of fine, silky tannins, supporting a profile of tart red fruit and cool spices. There is no sweetness, but tension. A lively, precise acidity guides the way to a lingering, mineral finish, with a subtle salinity that invites the next sip.
It is a red wine without artifice, without marked wood, without unnecessary extract. Valtuille Vino de Villa is the pure expression of the most elegant and vertical Bierzo. A wine with an identity, which is drunk slowly and attentively, like someone who listens to a story told in the ear by someone who has lived a lot and speaks little.
