Description
Sadie Family Mev. Kirsten is an oenological jewel that comes from the prestigious region of Stellenbosch, specifically from the Jonkershoek Valley. This wine is made from the Chenin Blanc grape variety, also known in South Africa as Steen. The geographical location of the vineyard, together with the decomposed granite soils on an alluvial base, provides a unique terroir that is reflected in every bottle.
Winemaking
The vinification of this wine has been a tradition since 2006. Over the last few years, much has been invested in improving the vineyard in terms of soil health and interplanting. It is interesting to note that the younger vines in this vineyard ripen about two weeks earlier than the older vines. Therefore, they are harvested first and still vinified separately. The vinification process includes a whole bunch pressing in old 500-litre barrels for the young vines and in an old foudre for the old vines. Over time, the younger fraction will also be included in the final blend. Fermentation is carried out with care, allowing for a slightly longer decanting time for the Mev. Kirsten vineyard, as fermentation can be reduced if too many impurities enter the fermentation stage.
As for ageing, the wine matures on the lees in French oak barrels and foudres for the first 12 months. Two weeks before bottling, the wine is transferred to a blending tank and about 50 mg/litre of sulphur is added to protect it. The wine usually settles to perfect clarity and can then be bottled unfiltered.
With a production of 25 hl/ha, an alcohol content of 13.6%, a residual sugar of 2.4 g/L, a pH of 3.37, a total acidity of 5.8 g/L and a total sulphur of 85 mg/L, this wine is a true oenological masterpiece.
Taste
Mev. Kirsten displays tropical fruit aromas that with time develop into aromas of fresh apricot and ripe peaches and pears, i.e. stone fruit aromatics. Firm tannins and a grippy acidity support these slightly riper, voluminous fruit aromas. The wine's structure and fruit volume are incredibly concentrated without being sweet in any way.
