Description
Matassa El Carner Rouge is a natural red wine made from Macabeo and Grenache Gris grapes, in a blend of 40% and 60% respectively.
It is produced by the Matassa winery, which is located in the Roussillon area, in the south of France; the vineyard is a 0.5 hectare plot planted on a lime, clay and slate soil, surrounded by garrigue. Like all the wines produced by this winery, Matassa El Carner Rouge is characterised by the naturalness of its fermentation and ageing process.
Winemaking
The grapes used in its production are grown in vineyards surrounded by low flora and vegetation typical of the area, which are also influenced by the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees. Their cultivation is completely sustainable and biodynamic, and they have managed to produce up to 18 hectolitres per hectare.
The Matassa El Carner Rouge wine is made by hand harvesting the fruit. Like many of its kind, it is vinified from whole bunches, without destemming. The maceration process can take up to 1 month for both grape varieties at the same time. It then undergoes alcoholic fermentation in 1000-litre barrels with indigenous yeasts, before being aged for 8 months in the same barrels.
Taste
The Matassa El Carner Rouge wine is a red wine, however, it is so balanced and clear that it may remind you of wines such as Himmel Alf Erden, which is classified as an excellent rosé wine.
It ischaracteristically natural with rich red fruit aromas and flavours. Being processed in volcanic soils, it takes on an earthy character, with smoky notes, light and with tension.

Its particular flavour classifies it as a natural and exquisite wine. For this reason, it is excellent for pairing with flavoured dishes such as white meat or blue fish, to be enjoyed on special occasions such as a romantic date, a family dinner or a business lunch.
