Buy Wine from Viñedos del Contino
The Viñedos del Contino winery is part of the group of wineries of the Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España in La Rioja Alta, together with other wineries such as CVNE (Haro) and Viña Real.
Origin of the name
The name of the winery is attributed to Pedro de Samaniego, who benefited from the lands of the property, the "Contino".
The name Contino was given to the officer of a guard of one hundred soldiers who watched "de contino" over the monarchs and their family.
Pedro de Samaniego was one of the one hundred soldiers of the Royal Guard who, in the time of the Catholic Monarchs, watched over the monarchs and their family and was given the property of Laserna, hence the name of the winery.
Location of the winery
Viñedos del Contino is currently part of the Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España group. This winery is characterised by a mixture of vineyards and wines, established in the surroundings of an old manor house and located in La Rioja Alavesa, on the banks of the river Ebro.
In 1973, thanks to the work of CVNE and the family that owns the estate, Contino was born, inspired by the French 'Châteux', the Burgundian 'clos' and the Californian 'singlevine'.
Classic line of wines
Contino produces a classic line of Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva, and a modern style line, Viña del Olivo and single varietal Graciano.
It is worth mentioning that the figure of San Gregorio, patron saint of the vineyards, is placed on the labels of the wine bottles.
A characteristic feature of their wines is that they are made exclusively from grapes planted in their vineyards, located in Laserna, Laguardia, in the Rioja Alavesa.
Contino Vineyards
The vineyards are planted on 62 hectares of alluvial soils. The composition of the soils is sandy loam and limestone in the deepest layers, and sandy-clay, with medium and high stony structure in the middle and superficial layers.
These soils have a high permeability and variable water retention capacity, in a climate that can be called continental Mediterranean or inland Mediterranean.
Winemaking
The distinctive properties of this winery for the creation of its wines have to do with a delicate work in the vineyard and a meticulous vinification process taking into account the different varieties planted.
On the other hand, as part of the group Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España, it is relevant its innovative facilities where classic wines with a modern style and great personality are produced.
Even before its first vintage, this winery is recognised as the result of a perfect combination of vineyards, climate, soil and technique.
Given all these advantages, Bodega Contino has been able to achieve in its magnificent wines qualities such as freshness, intense aromas and a unique character.
This results in wines with personality that triumph inside and outside our borders.
